Three Preventive Treatment Options

Periodontal disease means you could experience uncomfortable symptoms, and risk the loss of your teeth without treatment. But our team can offer preventive treatments to help prevent or manage the disease. In today’s blog, your Encinitas/San Diego, CA, periodontist talks about three of our preventive treatment options.

When to See Us

You should schedule a visit when you notice any changes to your gingival tissues, such as redness, soreness, or bleeding. Receding tissues are also cause for concern. Treatment is crucial for preventing the periodontitis stage, which could cause adult tooth loss. Don’t ignore these symptoms, talk to our team right away!

Scaling and Root Planing

If you have serious plaque and tartar buildup, this could lead to gingivitis or the early stages of periodontal disease. With a deep cleaning, we not only remove the plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth, but we also extract the deposits that form beneath the gums. After we remove them from your roots, we smooth out the surfaces so bacteria have a more difficult time adhering to them. We will take time to numb your smile and keep you comfortable. The procedure could take one visit, or up to four, it all depends on the severity of your buildup.

Supportive Periodontal Maintenance

Instead of a routine dental cleaning every six months, for people with periodontal disease or high-risk factors, we could offer Supportive Periodontal Maintenance (SPT) every three to four months. The procedure allows us to clean the teeth and prevent further disconnect between the gum tissues and the surfaces of the teeth. We remove deposits of plaque and tartar from on and between the teeth, and also along the gum line as well. This not only fights periodontal issues, but helps prevent tooth decay and infection as well.

Ozone Therapy

Our team could also provide a preventive treatment known as Ozone Therapy, or Oxygen Therapy. The procedure is designed to help destroy harmful oral bacteria, the kind that cause gum and teeth issues. This is a comfortable and minimally invasive way to prevent the disease, and keep your smile healthy and whole.

If you have any questions about how we diagnose and treat concerns like gum disease, or if you have sore, red, and bleeding gums that need attention, then contact our team today. We would love to start you on a treatment plan to protect your gums and keep your smile whole and beautiful for years to come.
