Gum disease is a very sinister disease in that it has no complete cure and that its influence extends a long way beyond the mouth. The disease often begins as gingivitis (the inflammation of the gums). While not particularly damaging, gingivitis tends to linger owing to the bacteria’s ability to prevent the immune system from attacking it. As the disease lives on, it may progress into periodontitis, a more damaging form of gum disease that attacks the tissues and ligaments that support teeth. When these ligaments are attacked, they begin to decay, a situation which corresponds with the loosening and movement of teeth. Eventually, teeth may be lost altogether, leaving the mouth devastated.
However, the risks of gum disease do not end with tooth loss. Gum disease increases the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes, making it a threat to your overall health as well as your oral health.
Gum disease has many recognizable symptoms that can vary based on the progression of the disease. These symptoms can include red gums, swollen gums, gums that bleed easily, loose or shifting teeth, lingering bad breath, and the development of pockets between the teeth and gums.
