How Sedation Keeps You Comfortable

When You Need Dental Sedation

Our team could recommend this for more involved procedures, such as gum grafting or the Pinhole Surgical Technique, that help address more severe concerns with your gum health. But we could also offer calming solutions to help those with dental anxiety or special needs that make undergoing dental treatment a difficult process. We don’t want these factors to stand between you and the strong, healthy smile you deserve. Which is why we will often recommend a calming solution. The option we recommend will be based on a number of factors, such as age, weight, medical history, and anxiety levels.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, this is a very common option that involves breathing in a special gas through a mask over the nose. The gas helps you enter a relaxed state instantly, and the effects will end the moment the procedure does. Which means many people can actually return to work or school afterward. You remain conscious during the procedure and can respond to the dentist as needed, but will likely have little to no memory of the procedure at all.

Oral Conscious

Oral conscious sedation is a deeper form of relaxation that we administer before the procedure begins, usually in a pill or liquid form. You enter a deeper state of calm with little to no memory, but you will be conscious enough to respond to the dentist as needed. The effects take time to wear off completely, so you may need a friend or a family member on hand to bring you home afterward.

The deepest form of sedation is offered through intravenous means, and helps you enter a very deep state of calm. Again, you will have little to no memory of the procedure, and will need someone to bring you home as the effects gradually wear off.
