Fight Gum Disease With Better Hygiene

Periodontal disease can impact half of adults over the age of 30, according to studies from the Centers for Disease Control. But often, good oral hygiene and a healthy diet could strengthen your smile and reduce your risk. In today’s blog, your Encinitas/San Diego, CA, periodontist talks about fighting gum disease with better hygiene habits.

Brushing Your Teeth

First, be sure you pick up a toothbrush with soft bristles to prevent damage to your gums. You should also choose a toothpaste with fluoride, which fights harmful bacteria and helps strengthen the outer enamel. You should clean your teeth for about two minutes in the morning and then again at night. Be sure you reach every available surface of your teeth, and also clean along the gum line to remove trapped food and drink particles that could feed the bacteria behind gingivitis and gum disease. You can use a manual or electric toothbrush, as both are effective when used properly.

Taking Time to Floss

You also need to floss your teeth every evening before you brush the second time. You should take a 20-inch length of tape and wrap each end around one of your thumbs, holding it taut with your index finger. Then run the tape up and down each side of every tooth, dipping beneath the gum to dislodge trapped particles. You can adjust your grip to use a clean length for each tooth. You can also use a floss pick if that’s easier! This is essential for fighting issues like gingivitis and gum disease.

Improving Your Nutritional Intake

What you eat and drink also impacts the health of your smile too! You should choose options with calcium, as this can strengthen your jaw and tooth enamel, and also improve your immune system and reduce the risk of periodontal concerns. These products include green and leafy vegetables, dairy products, and lean meats, such as fish, chicken, and turkey. Vitamin D is also important, as this helps your body absorb calcium and strengthens your smile. Avoid soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks, and instead drink lots of water or items high in vitamin C or D.
