Does Brushing And Flossing Prevent Gum Disease?

A number of factors could be responsible for periodontal disease, including poor oral hygiene. But does brushing and flossing your teeth actually make a difference? In today’s blog, your Encinitas/San Diego, CA, periodontist talks about the oral hygiene habits that can help you enjoy good oral health and avoid poor gum health!

The Factors Behind Periodontal Disease

Gum inflammation, also known as gingivitis, could develop when the gums are exposed to plaque and tartar buildup, which irritates them and eventually, the inflammation could cause tissues to pull away from the teeth and form pockets for bacteria to enter, leading to periodontal disease. This harmful buildup could be the rest of poor brushing and flossing habits, a diet high in sugar and starch, and lack of professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar every few months. Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products could be a factor too, along with a history of poor periodontal health, inflammatory illness, or the use of certain medications. When you care for your smile each day, this approach to oral hygiene could help prevent or manage the disease.

Brushing Your Teeth

You should brush your teeth first thing when you wake up in the morning, and then do so again before going to bed. Each session should last about two minutes, to ensure you’re reaching every available surface. We suggest a toothbrush with soft bristles to prevent inadvertent gum irritation. Use a fluoride toothpaste too, as this helps strengthen your outer enamel to prevent cavities. You can use an electric toothbrush or a manual one, as long as you take time to clean your teeth both are effective.

Flossing

Even more vital than brushing your teeth is flossing, which you should do every evening before you brush your teeth the second time. This involves using floss tape, string, or a pick to clean between the teeth, moving the tape up and down each side of every tooth, and dipping beneath the gum line. This removes particles trapped along the gum line or between the teeth, which a toothbrush may have difficulty reaching. This helps fight cavities, bad breath, and of course, gingivitis and periodontal disease.
