Whether you are receiving care for periodontic treatment or obtaining dental implants to tackle your tooth loss, we can offer sedation dentistry! From nitrous oxide to IV sedation, we can help you feel comfortable. In today’s blog, Dr. Ann Kania talks about keeping patients in Encinitas/San Diego, CA, comfortable with sedation dentistry.
When Our Patients Need Sedation Dentistry
We recommend a calming medication when a patient is undergoing a more extensive treatment, such as jawbone grafting or dental implant placement, to ensure comfort. We also recommend this when someone has dental anxiety that may make it difficult to undergo care, or if someone has special needs that could complicate the ability to receive periodontic treatment. We offer three options and to see which one is right for you, we will look at factors like age, weight, medical history, and any medications you are currently taking. We also assess your overall anxiety levels too!
Nitrous Oxide
The most common option is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This option will be administered through a mask over your nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm and euphoria, with little to no memory of the process. We can adjust levels during care, and the effects wear off once the procedure ends, so you can even drive yourself home or return to work or school!
Oral Conscious
If you require a more substantial level of calming, then we could offer oral conscious sedation before your procedure in a pill or liquid form. We may suggest fasting before the procedure begins, and you will enter a very deep state of calm, with little to no memory of the procedure at all. The effects take time to wear off completely, so you will need to have someone ready to take you home afterward.
IV
The deepest form we have available is administered intravenously. With the IV option, you actually enter a deep and sleep-like state. A trained anesthesiologist will be on hand to monitor you the entire time, and the effects again take time to wear off completely, so you should have someone available to take you home afterward.
With all options, we will provide detailed aftercare instructions and if necessary, prescriptions for medications, to aid in the healing process. If you have any questions about how we help smiles with dental sedation, then contact our team today to learn more and get started!
