What Are Pinhole® Gum Grafts?

When Gums Recede

Gum recession is a rather common phenomenon that can occur gradually as you grow older, or more quickly as  trauma, gingivitis and gum disease begin to develop. It describes the separation of your gums from the roots of your teeth, which exposes the roots. Through gum graft treatment, we can restore the protective layer of tissue to once again protect your teeth roots, reduce your risk of gum disease, and improve the look of your smile.

PST® vs. Traditional Gum Graft Surgery

Traditional gum grafts involve grafting donor tissue from another area (such as the palate or roof of your mouth) onto the damaged area of your gum tissues. Though not an especially-difficult process, gum graft surgery can be a bit invasive, and you will likely require sutures afterwards.

By contrast, the Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) involves creating a miniscule hole in the tissues with a small needle, rather than an incision with a scalpel. Through the small hole, or pinhole, Dr. Kania can maneuver specialized equipment to carefully reposition your gum tissues, utilizing a medicated collagen application to promote gum healing and reattachment.
