When Is Sedation a Good Option?

Sedation has long been a part of professional oral health care, most notably for helping patients with severe dental anxiety and phobia overcome their fears. However, many patients in Encinitas/San Diego who don’t fear oral health treatment also benefit greatly from the comfort and relaxation that sedation helps them achieve. For example, when complex treatment is required, especially procedures that may require more than one visit to complete, the right level of sedation can help make the process significantly more comfortable.

Laser periodontal surgery

Laser periodontal surgery, or LANAP, is often performed when periodontal disease becomes a prominent threat. The procedure involves using a highly advanced laser to trim diseased tissue, eliminate harmful oral bacteria, and promote the health and reattachment of healthy gum tissues. Because the laser is more precise than a traditional scalpel, the procedure is more comfortable. However, it can be made even more so with the help of customized sedation.

Pinhole gum grafting

Much like LANAP treatment, pinhole gum grafting is also designed to be as comfortable and minimally invasive as possible. It involves creating miniscule pinholes and utilizing specialized technology to perform gum grafts without needing a scalpel. Also, like LANAP, many patients who undergo gum grafting can find further comfort and relaxation with the right level of sedation.

Dental implant placement

Dental implants, which are small posts designed to replace your lost teeth roots, must be surgically inserted into your jawbone. Like all surgery, sedation is often an important part of treatment, as it helps you remain calm and still throughout the procedure to ensure optimal results. Before performing implant placement, your periodontist will assess what level of sedation will work best for you.

More Comfortable Treatment with Sedation
