Like tooth decay, periodontal disease develops when periodontal pathogens (bacteria) are allowed to overwhelm your immune system. In the case of your periodontal health, some bacteria found in plaque can damage the connective tissues between your gums and teeth, causing gums to recede (separate from your teeth). Other bacteria can invoke inflammation that injures your gums. During your periodontal cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly cleans bacteria, plaque, and tartar (calcified plaque) on and around your teeth.
When allowed to develop and run rampant through your gum tissues, periodontal disease can destroy the gums and jawbone that support your healthy teeth. Moderate to severe periodontal disease typically destroys gums so that they can’t heal and reattach to your teeth, and Dr. Kania may recommend treatment to restore your gums and your smile’s foundation. Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to the loss of one or more teeth, and the inflammation associated with the condition can become a risk factor for other chronic inflammatory illnesses, including heart disease, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. If you notice redness, swelling, and/or bleeding in your gums, then visit Dr. Kania as soon as possible to improve the possibility of preventing gum disease.
