Sedation Dentistry Provides Comfortable Treatment

We want to treat your periodontal disease and even replace your missing teeth with dental implants as needed! But we know that for some people, anxiety could stand between them and better oral health. Which is why we offer multiple calming options! In today’s blog, your Encinitas, CA, periodontist talks about dental sedation.

Choosing the Right Sedation for You

Dental sedation can help people with anxiety stay calm and comfortable, even if they’re undergoing more extensive treatments. In addition, this can help those with special needs, and also keep our patients comfortable during complex oral surgical procedures. The option we recommend will depend on a number of different factors. For example, we will take your eight, age, and medical history into account, as well as any medications you may be taking. We look at the presence of speed needs or high anxiety levels too. We never minimize your discomfort or unease, and we want to ensure you enjoy a positive experience at our office, so you can finally focus on obtaining the smile you deserve! We have three different options to choose from, and will select the one that best helps you.

Nitrous Oxide

One of the more common dental sedation treatments is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This is administered through a mask over your nose. You inhale a gas and enter a calm and euphoric state. You’re comfortable, but will have little to no memory of the procedure. The effects can be adjusted during your care, and end once the treatment does. Which means you can return to work or school and can even drive yourself home!

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you require a deeper state of calm, then we could opt for oral conscious sedation. The medication is taken in pill or liquid form before the procedure begins, and you enter a much deeper state of relaxation. While still remaining conscious. You again have little to no memory of the procedure, but the effects take time to wear off comfortably, so be sure a friend or family member is available to bring you home afterward.

The IV Approach

The deepest form of calming, one we reserve for more advanced treatments or severe anxiety, is IV. Administered intravenously, this offers the deepest state of calm possible. You enter a deep sleep-like state, with no memory of the procedure. We will monitor you throughout the procedure., and again the effects will take time to wear off, so have someone ready to bring you home afterward.
