Do You Have Gum Disease?

kaniagumdiseaseMillions of people experience varying stages of this disease. Without treatment, gum disease poses a risk to the health and stability of your smile. Do you have gum disease? How do you recognize the warning signs? By understanding the warning signs of the issue you can seek treatment before more uncomfortable warning signs develop.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Gum disease occurs when the gingival tissue becomes inflamed and pulls away from the teeth. This process exposes pockets that bacteria can enter, leading to the development of the disease. Over time, the issue can progress in severity until the connective tissue between the teeth and gums dissolves, leading to loose teeth and eventually a high risk of adult tooth loss.

How Do You Know If You Need Treatment?

You should be aware of any changes in your mouth. For example, common warning signs include gums that feel sore, appear redder than usual, or possibly bleed when you brush or floss. Other symptoms include noticeable gum recession and loose teeth. Any changes to your gums or sudden discomfort should be looked at by a periodontist. The doctor can identify the presence of periodontal disease and recommend treatment.

How Will the Doctor Treat the Disease?

We offer a number of treatment options, including:

  • LANAP: Using dental lasers, the doctor can remove infected tissue.
  • Pinhole Gum Graft: This treatment addresses gum disease by correcting gum recession.
  • Scaling and Root Planing: In the early stages, gingivitis can be halted or reversed with the removal of the plaque and tartar from the teeth. This treatment can treat gingivitis or help manage gum disease.
