Dental implants consist of three main parts—the implant posts that are inserted into your jawbone, connective abutments that attach to the posts, and a custom-designed crown/bridge/denture supported by the posts and abutments. After the implant posts are strategically placed into your jawbone, your jaw will heal to the posts over the course of 4-6 months. Then, the abutments can be attached to the posts and utilized to secure your lifelike prosthesis. While your appliance replaces the visible portions of your smile, the implant posts replace the support and stimulation that were once provided by your missing teeth roots.
One of the best things about dental implants is that most patients who’ve suffered tooth loss can be viable candidates for the procedure. However, there are certain circumstances that can affect your candidacy, such as the presence of periodontal disease or a weaker, less dense jawbone. Before recommending dental implant placement, Dr. Kania will carefully examine your oral health to determine if you may need to undergo a prerequisite procedure first. For instance, periodontal treatment can help you control gum disease, or jawbone grafting may help bolster your jawbone to improve the chances of success for your dental implants.
With one or more dental implants, you can more successfully rebuild your smile following tooth loss. To learn more, schedule a consultation with Dr. Kania by calling her periodontal office in Encinitas/San Diego, CA, at (760) 642-0711.
