FAQs: Tips for Gum Disease Prevention

In the United States, gum disease affects millions of adults. This common dental disease can actually increase the risk of adult tooth loss, hurting the appearance and stability of your smile. Fortunately, this widespread dental health issue can be prevented with the right preventive measures.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Disease Prevention

Question: What causes gum disease?

Answer: When our gums become inflamed, they may eventually pull away from the teeth. Soon, pockets form at the gum line. Once bacteria invade these pockets, a patient may develop periodontal disease. Factors behind inflammation include poor oral hygiene, hormonal fluctuations, and chronic illness, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Question: Can brushing and flossing help avoid periodontal disease?

Answer: Yes. Simple oral hygiene can help reduce your risk of developing gum inflammation. You should brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and again before bed. You also need to floss once a day, preferably before bed. These actions remove the stray food particles that bacteria feed on. Otherwise, bacteria break down the particles, leaving plaque on the teeth. Bacterial plague is a major cause of gum inflammation.

Question: Do I need more frequent dental cleanings?

Answer: A dental cleaning completely removes plaque from your teeth. The American Dental Association recommends two dental cleanings a year, about once every six months for healthy patients. However, patients with a higher risk of developing gum disease may require care more often.

Question: What are the warning signs of periodontal disease?

Answer: Signs to watch for include gums that appear red or may recede. Gums that bleed easily, bad breath, and loose teeth are also common warning signs.
