Questions About Laser Periodontal Therapy

As a periodontal expert, Dr. Kania’s goal is more than just treating your periodontal issues, but doing so in a way that offers the most comprehensive solutions, with minimal discomfort and inconvenience to you. When it comes to treating mild, moderate, or severe periodontal disease, conservative treatment may involve the use of a soft-tissue laser rather than more traditional, and often more invasive, treatment methods. Through laser periodontal therapy, your San Diego periodontist can help restore your oral health with more precision, increased comfort, and a much higher chance of long-term success.

Advanced Periodontal Treatment

1.) How are diseased gums treated?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is caused by bacterial colonies settling underneath your gums, on your teeth’s roots and your immune response to these organisms. Treating the condition involves cleaning away the bacteria and sanitizing the area to discourage future bacterial buildup, and in more advanced cases, repairing damaged and infected gum tissues.

2.) What can lasers do for your periodontal health?

Before periodontal disease progresses too far, it can typically be with non-surgical therapy.  In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to access the deeper areas underneath your gums. Using the Periolase MVP-7 Nd:YAG digital laser and the LANAP protocol (laser-assisted new attachment procedure), Dr. Kania can treat your gums without a scalpel, and therefore without the need for sutures. The LANAP protocol also promotes periodontal healing and reattachment to your teeth’s roots for improved results.

3.) What are the surgical advantages to laser periodontal therapy?

By eschewing the traditional scalpel, laser periodontal therapy significantly reduces bleeding and swelling during and after the procedure, and minimizes collateral damage to surrounding tissues by offering unmatched precision. As the laser trims away damage tissues, the concentrated beam of light simultaneously seals the gum tissue left behind.
