Laser periodontal treatment is known as LANAP, or laser-assisted new attachment protocol. It consists of using a gentle, specially calibrated laser to trim away severely diseased gum tissues and eradicate oral bacteria from underneath the healthy tissues. The minimally invasive nature of the procedure and the advanced bacterial control of the laser help healthy gum tissues heal and reattach to your teeth roots.
Increased comfort is one of the biggest benefits of LANAP periodontal treatment. Traditionally, periodontal surgery required the use of a scalpel, which produces bleeding and the need for sutures following treatment. While traditional treatment is effective, LANAP allows for greater comfort by causing less trauma to your gum tissues, little or no bleeding, and no need for sutures as you heal.
While many patients with gum disease can benefit from laser treatment, you may require additional care and maintenance if your condition is severe. For instance, extreme gum disease may cause erosion in your jawbone structure, which can increase your risks of tooth loss and visibly affect the surrounding oral and facial structures. If necessary, we may suggest gum and/or jawbone grafting to boost your jawbone and periodontal health, especially if you need to replace one or more lost teeth with dental implants.
With the help of advanced laser technology, LANAP helps make periodontal treatment and maintenance more comfortable and effective for many patients. For more information, schedule a consultation with Dr. Kania by calling her periodontal office in Encinitas/San Diego, CA, at (760) 642-0711.
