Question: What changes will occur in my gum tissue?
Answer: First, you gums may begin to feel sensitive or sore. When you brush and floss, they could bleed easily. You may also notice they appear more red than pink. These are warning signs of gingivitis or the early stages of periodontal disease. As the problem progresses, you may notice your gums receding.
Question: What factors can lead to the disease?
Answer: The disease develops as a result of untreated inflammation. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, can occur as a result of poor oral hygiene (which allows plaque buildup to form), the use of certain medications, or inflammatory illnesses. If you have a family history of developing the disease, then you may be at a greater risk as well.
Question: What happens if I don’t seek treatment?
Answer: Without treatment, the issue continues to grow worse until finally, you develop periodontitis. At this stage, the very tissue connecting your teeth and gums begin to be broken down. Soon, teeth may feel loose or become lost. You should seek treatment at the first signs of trouble in order to avoid the risk of losing your teeth.
Question: Can my periodontist help?
Answer: Yes! We can offer treatment to either reverse gingivitis or manage gum disease, keeping your smile healthy and comfortable. We can use deep cleanings or antimicrobial rinses to address the early stages, or laser dentistry to help treat advanced cases of periodontal disease.
