Why Do We Need Diagnostic Imaging?

Why do we need diagnostic imaging? Before you can receive treatment for your oral health issues, you need an accurate diagnosis. Our team will need to look at your jaw and gums for signs of possible problems, including periodontal disease. To ensure an accurate diagnosis, the doctor will employ diagnostic imaging.

Frequently Asked Questions About Diagnostic Imaging

Question: When does the doctor perform diagnostic imaging?

Answer: Typically the doctor takes images of your teeth during your initial visit. She may also gather detailed pictures of your oral health during follow up visits as well.

Question: What does the doctor look for?

Answer: The doctor carefully examines your gums for signs of gingivitis and gum disease. The doctor also looks at the jaw for signs of degradation and other issues. From there, the doctor can recommend treatment. Early treatment of oral health issues can often mean avoiding more costly and intensive treatment options. For that reason, we always suggest having your smile examined at regular intervals.

Question: What warning signs should we be aware of?

Answer: You should always take notice of changes in your gums, jaw, or teeth. If you gums appear more red or sore, then you be at risk for developing gingivitis. Soreness in the jaw could be a sign of bruxism, TMD or another oral health concern. Pain in your teeth or gums, especially when you brush or floss, could be warning signs of either decay or possibly gum disease. Instead of ignoring these changes, schedule a visit right away.

Question: How does digital x-ray technology differ from traditional x-rays?

Answer: Digital x-rays don’t require harsh chemicals or development time. Instead, the images are available right away for the doctor to view and to show you. The resulting images are also more detailed than traditional x-ray images.
