Three Preventive Treatments To Protect Your Gums

To protect your gums from periodontal disease, or to manage the disease to avoid the advanced systems, you need preventive care. Our team can offer regular cleanings and more to help keep your disease in a manageable stage. In today’s blog, your Encinitas/San Diego, CA, periodontist talks about our preventive treatments.

Supportive Periodontal Maintenance Visits

In place of a traditional cleaning, we will offer Supportive Periodontal Maintenance, a procedure in which we clean the teeth and remove harmful buildup to prevent the loss of attachment between the teeth and gums. In most cases, we recommend this every three to four months. We remove buildup from the surfaces of the teeth and from beneath or along the gumline, which helps prevent periodontal disease from reaching a more advanced state. You then avoid the risk of complications like tooth loss!

Deep Cleanings

If you have buildup on the roots of your teeth and beneath the gumline, then we may recommend a deep cleaning to remove the harmful deposits of plaque and tartar. We use an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual pick to remove the buildup from the teeth and roots, and we then smooth the surface of the roots. This enables the gums to reattach to the teeth, covering the gums and helping us manage the disease more easily moving forward. This could take one visit or up to four, depending on the severity of your buildup. Our team will administer a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable, as this is a more involved cleaning.

Ozone Therapy

Our team also offers preventive treatments with a holistic approach, so we can help manage the issue and protect the stability of your smile. With Ozone Therapy, we administer oxygen directly to your gums to destroy pockets of oral bacteria, sterilizing and purifying the area. This is minimally invasive and helps fight gingivitis and gum disease, as well as tooth decay and dental infection. We could also recommend antibiotics to aid in management too.

If you have any questions about how we manage your disease or prevent it with holistic treatment options, then please contact our team today to learn more. A visit now is a chance to also put your last remaining dental benefits to use before they expire at the end of the year. The same goes for any remaining health saving account funds too! Let’s work together to start 2024 with healthy and strong smiles!
