How We Manage Your Gum Health With Preventive Treatments

Following treatment with dental lasers, or for patients with the early stages of the disease, we can offer treatment with preventive solutions. With a preventive approach, we can help your smile stay whole and healthy. In today’s blog, your Encinitas/San Diego, CA, periodontist talks about how we manage your gum health with preventive treatments.

Supportive Periodontal Maintenance

A dental cleaning every few months can help control harmful buildup of plaque and tartar to ensure your gums remain strong and healthy. Instead of a traditional cleaning, our team could offer Supportive Periodontal Maintenance, which allows us to remove buildup from the teeth and along the gum line. Doing so every three to four months keeps your smile healthy and strong, controlling the presence of harmful buildup and bacteria.

Scaling and Root Planing

If you see us during the early stages of periodontal disease, then our team could offer a preventive procedure known as a scaling and root planing. The procedure uses the same ultrasonic scaling device and manual tool as a traditional cleaning, only we’re removing buildup from both the teeth and the roots. We also destroy harmful oral bacteria from beneath the gum line. The procedure can take one visit to finish or as many as four visits, depending on the severity of your buildup. Afterward, we can manage your oral health with a routine cleaning every three to four months, or with Supportive Periodontal Maintenance.

Ozone Therapy

With Ozone Therapy, our team will administer oxygen directly to the gums in a liquid or gas form. Oxygen will destroy harmful bacteria while leaving healthy bacteria in place, preserving your smile’s biome. This process only takes a short time to finish, and can help manage your periodontal health so you avoid redness, swelling, or bleeding.

Antimicrobial Medications

Our team could also administer antimicrobial medications that destroy harmful oral bacteria, so the ones that can cause disease are eliminated. Along with medications, we could also recommend a healthy diet low in sugar and starch, and high Vitamin C and D. What we eat impacts our gum health, and we want to help you avoid periodontitis, the stage linked to adult tooth loss.

If you have any questions about how our team will diagnose and treat issues like periodontal disease, or if you would like to schedule your first visit of 2025, then contact our team today to learn more.
