In short, a traditional bridge is a dental prosthetic featuring a row of one or more replacement teeth set between crowns. The crowns, called abutment crowns, are permanently secured to teeth that reside on either side of the space left by missing teeth. There are two “fixed” options to replace missing teeth. Fixed options are not removed by the patient. A bridge is a permanent, non-removable dental prosthetic – and so is a dental implant. The difference is, an implant does not attach to existing teeth. Like a natural tooth, a dental implant anchors into the jaw. So, while placing an implant requires a surgery, the procedure does not require permanently altering adjacent teeth.
